Veterans Benefits That Can Help Pay for a Senior Move
Why Veterans Benefits Often Go Unclaimed
Every year, billions of dollars in veterans benefits go unclaimed simply because families don’t know they exist. If your parent served during wartime, they — or their surviving spouse — may be eligible for a tax-free pension that can help pay for assisted living, home care, and the move to get there.
Aid and Attendance: The Benefit Most Families Miss
Aid and Attendance is a monthly, tax-free payment added on top of the basic VA pension. It’s designed specifically for veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities — dressing, bathing, cooking, managing medications — whether at home or in a care community. In 2024 it can be worth over $2,000 a month for a married veteran.
Who Qualifies
- Served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during wartime
- Discharged under conditions other than dishonorable
- Needs help with daily living activities or is largely housebound
- Meets income and asset limits (a primary home is generally excluded)
How to Apply
- Gather discharge papers (DD-214) and current medical records
- Document monthly income and out-of-pocket medical and care costs
- Submit VA Form 21-2680, signed by a physician
- Work with an accredited veteran service officer (VSO) — free of charge
Other Programs Worth Knowing
- State veterans homes and county veterans service offices
- VA homemaker and home health aide services
- Respite care for family caregivers
- Housebound pension for veterans confined to home
Getting Help With the Process
The paperwork can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. An accredited VSO — through the VA, a county office, or a service organization like the VFW or American Legion — will help you apply at no cost. Avoid anyone who charges to guarantee benefits; that’s a red flag.
