Your Top Senior Move Questions, Answered by People Who Have Done This 1,000 Times
Every family comes to us with questions. Some are about logistics. Some are about cost. Some are about the things they are afraid to say out loud — about guilt, about grief, about whether they are doing the right thing.
After thirty years of senior moves in Milwaukee and Southeastern Wisconsin, we have heard them all. Here are the questions that come up most often — with the straightforward, honest answers we give every family we work with.
How much does a senior move manager cost?
We charge on a per-hour basis. This means you pay for the time and expertise you actually use, with no padded flat-rate packages. Projects vary widely depending on the size of the home, the amount of downsizing required, and the scope of unpacking and setup at the new residence. We begin every project with a free, no-obligation consultation.
How far in advance should we call you?
As early as possible, but we understand that is not always how it works. If you are in the early stages of thinking about a move — even if the decision has not been made — we are happy to meet, assess the scope, and help you understand what is involved. Having a plan reduces panic if the timeline accelerates.
If you are in a compressed timeline due to a health event or sudden community placement, call us immediately. We have completed full moves in as little as five days.
Can you help even if the move is out of state?
Yes. We are members of NASMM — the National Association of Senior Move Managers — which maintains a national network of certified professionals. We will help you identify, interview, and connect with a trusted move manager in the destination city who will handle the unpacking and setup there.
What if my parent refuses to cooperate?
This is more common than most families expect. We have a gentle, neutral presence that often works when family members cannot get through. We are not the adult child with decades of history. We are an experienced professional who has been through this process hundreds of times, and that neutrality is genuinely helpful.
Do you provide packing materials, or do we need to get our own?
We provide all packing materials. We source from the same suppliers as major moving companies, and our lower overhead allows us to offer those materials at a lower cost than most families would pay purchasing retail.
What happens to the items that are not coming to the new home?
We coordinate all of it. Donation pickups and drop-offs to Milwaukee-area organizations. Introductions to trusted estate sale professionals. Coordination with family members who want specific pieces. Disposal of items that cannot be donated or sold. We handle every category so the family does not have to.
Will the new apartment feel like home when you are done?
That is always the goal. We create a scaled floor plan of the new space before move day and use it to place every piece of furniture intentionally. We hang the family photos in familiar arrangements. We organize the kitchen to match the habits of a lifetime. We make the bed with familiar sheets before the senior walks in the door.
What should we do first if we think a move might be coming?
Call us. Even if you are not sure. Even if the move is months away. Even if your parent has not agreed to it yet. A free, no-obligation consultation gives you a clearer picture of what is involved, a realistic timeline, and a sense of what it would actually cost.
